Department of Ophthalmology, Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University, was established in 1958. It is one of the early department of ophthalmology in a general hospital in Beijing. In the past 60 years, the excellent traditional concept of "taking patients as the center" in Xuanwu hospital and the rich experience of Ophthalmology scientific diagnosis and treatment have been carried out for the purpose of "removing eye diseases and sending light". More than 40,000 patients came to our department to solve their eye problems.
The Department of Ophthalmology of Xuanwu hospital is divided into six major specialties, including cataract, glaucoma, retinal disease, ocular refraction, corneal and lacrimal diseases and neuroophthalmology, as well as related sub majors related to children's amblyopia, ocular surface disease, ocular trauma, irititis disease and eyelid dermatosis. All the professional groups are teams of ophthalmologists with different levels of titles, who play important role in providing qualified medical service. So far, we have developed systemic in and out patient department and operation room as well. Over the years, we devote ourselves to the prevention and treatment of senile eye diseases, providing a large number of convenient and feasible treatment mode for elderly patients.
Since the beginning of the establishment of ophthalmology, with the combination help of neurosurgery we completed joint craniotomy removal of optic nerve sheath tumors, optic nerve glioma and meningioma. During 60s -80s years, a variety of orbital tumor surgery more than 400 cases were completed and remarkable results were achieved.
With the development of modern ophthalmology, ophthalmic surgical microscope was introduced from the end of 80s, symbling the era of ophthalmic microsurgery. Annual operation amount exceeded 3500 cases by now, reaching the advanced level of Beijing. In 2007, in order to release the cause for intracranial hypertension papilledema, surgical treatment of optic nerve sheath decompression was carried out, which was an advanced technique in Beijing. After surgery, good operation effect, postoperative protection of visual function obtained the full affirmation. At the same time, advanced surgery for refractory glaucoma, complicated cataract surgery, multifocal intraocular lens implantation, anti VEGF injection for senile macular lesions, refractive surgery for ultra high myopia, corneal transplantation, and corneal limbal stem cell transplantation have been developed in the department of ophthalmology.
In 2005, with the advantage of the intervention therapy of cerebrovascular disease in Xuanwu hospital， treatment of central retinal artery occlusion with superselective thrombolytic therapy was carried out for the diagnosis and treatment of central retinal artery occlusion. More than 300 patients with different degree of visual impairment had been treated during recent ten years. The ophthalmic emergency diagnosis and treatment of central retinal artery occlusion has been through the Easy Access in our hospital and our department has become one of the few to carry out interventional treatment of retinal vascular diseases all over the nation.
Eyelid&skin plastic began to run since 2016, the elderly related diseases including eyelid entropion and ectropion, trichiasis, skin laxity, ptosis and eyelid defect and tumor were carried out widely. The group has achieved good results, won the majority positive comfirm by patients.
